Message-ID: Hi all :) Just a quick note that Caroline and I are in New Zealand this week doing the Otago Rail Trail. (Australian law requires her to be off shore while they process our migration application, so a compulsory holiday was required!) If you need a hand with IT stuff this week, you can try Jason Mills on 0408 690 435, or Amac Digital 02 6771 2266, or Armidale Computers on 02 6771 2712. Of course you can also reach me online via email, Skype, Facebook messenger, or for this week only on +6429 126 9931. Cheers, Mike. ________________________________ Proprietor, Cool Country Consulting. In-Reply-To: <4F3F3C14.9000205@auzzie.net> References: <4F3F3C14.9000205@auzzie.net> Message-ID: <55112F65.5050008@auzzie.net> *****NetFlix is here :)* Just a quick note to let you know that Netflix is now officially available in Australia. *What can you watch?* See the long list at the end of this email. You can watch any show at any time. *What can you watch it on?* Your ordinary TV, computer, tablet, iPhone, Android phone, Apple TV, Smart TV or Chromecast. The website is http://netflix.com.au/ *How much does it cost?* Starts at $9 a month for one screen, $12 for two screens at once in HD, $15 for four screens at once. Note: It uses a lot of Internet too, so best for unlimited or generous ADSL or NBN plans. Might work on Satellite too. *Don't understand? Want a demo?* I can show you how to use it by giving you a demonstration. (I carry an Apple TV around with me.) You get the first month free too, so you can give it a shot without paying a thing. If you already have WiFi but don't have a Smart TV, you can either buy an Apple TV for around $110 or a ChromeCast for $50. These little things plug in to your TV and turn it into a "Smart TV". The Apple TV comes with a handy remote control, or you can use your iPhone to send what you're watching to the TV. The Chromecast uses your phone / tablet as the remote control. Alternatively, most recent laptops can plug into your TV using an HDMI cable. (Useful for ABC iView and pirated downloads as well.) *The show I want isn't available?* There are other streaming services you can try. Or pirate it if your constitution allows. *Your WiFi is too weak to reach the TV.* I have a number of solutions including Ethernet over Power adapters, WiFi range extenders, etc. *YouTube doesn't work well for you?* Netflix has a better streaming system than YouTube. Give it a try anyway, it might work. *And now, the program list? (Note - many are one or more series.)* 64 Zoo Lane Absolutely Fabulous Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials Absolutely Fabulous: Gay Absolutely Fabulous: Olympics Special Almost Naked Animals American Horror Story Andy's Wild Adventure Angelina Ballerie: The Show Must Go On Angelina Ballerina Sets Sail Angelina Ballerina: The Shining Star Trophy Angelina's Princess Dance Angry Boys Arrested Development Arrow Australia: The Time Traveller's Guide Balamory Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse Barney Blue Exorcist Bo on the Go Bob the Builder Bob The Builder On Site: Green Homes and Recycling Bob the Builder: A Christmas to Remember Bob the Builder: Bob's Big Plan Bob the Builder: Built to be Wild Bob the Builder: Houses & Playgrounds Bob the Builder: Knights of Fix-a-lot Bob the Builder: Race to the Finish (The Movie) Bob the Builder: Roads & Bridges Bob the Builder: Scrambler to the Rescue Bob the Builder: Skyscrapers Bob the Builder: Snowed Under Bob the Builder: The Big Dino Dig Bob the Builder: The Golden Hammer Bob the Builder: When Bob became a builder Bob the Bulder On Site: Trains & Treehouses BoJack Horseman Broadchurch Brookly Nine-Nine Caillou's Holiday Movie Call the Midwife Care Bears Care Bears: Grizzle-Ly Adventures Care Bears: Ups and Downs Charlie and Lola Charlie and Lola Christmas at Pee Wee's Playhouse Crownies Danger 5 Darknet David Attenborough Wildlife Specials Deadly 60 Departures Digimon Dino Dan Doc McStuffins Doctor Who Doctor Who: Dreamland Doctor Who: The Movie Dorothy The Dinosaur Meets Santa Claus Dorothy the Dinosaur: Dorothy the Dinosaur's Travelling Show Dorothy the Dinosaur's Beach Party Dorothy the Dinosaur's Memory Book Dorothy the Dinosaur's Rockin' Christmas Downton Abbey Emma Ever After High: Spring Unsprung Extras Fairytail Falling Skies Fate/Zero Fawlty Towers Firefly Forezen Planet Freaks and Geeks Friday Night Lights Full Metal Alchemist Good Luck Charlie Goosebumps Gorillas: On the Trail of King Kong Gossip Girl Great Expectations Gurrent Lagann H2O: Just Add Water Hemlock Grove Heroes Hiroshima Homeland Horrible Histories Horrid Henry Horseland House House of Cards How I met your mother Human Planet In The Night Garden - Season 1 Inspector Gadget's Field Trip Iron Man: Armored Adventures Jake & The Never Land Pirates: Jake Saves Bucky Jamie: Private School Girl Janet King Jonah from Tonga Julius Jr. Justin Time Kickin it Kill La Kill King Julien Kipper Knights of Sidonia Lalaloopsy Larva Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu Lego: Chima Lego: Friends Life Life in Our Universe Lightning Point Lions: Spy in the Den Little Princess Longmire Lost Luther M.I. Message-ID: <55B8B40B.1070902@auzzie.net> Hi all :) Just a quick note that Windows 10 has been released, and is starting to roll out to people. If you have reserved a copy via the icon near your clock on Windows 7 or 8, your computer may start downloading it in the background soon. It will take about 4GB, so if you're on a limited mobile broadband plan or use a hotspot feature on your phone to access the Internet on your computer, it may use up your download allowance unexpectedly. If you haven't reserved it yet, it's probably wise to wait a few weeks to see how it goes for those who have before deciding. Cheers, Mike. Message-ID: <55E5B9BE.1000603@auzzie.net> G'day all :) If you're on Windows 7 or 8 you're probably getting daily reminders that Windows 10 is ready for you. It is probably OK to install if you want to, provided you have at least 3GB of Internet Downloads available on your plan. (Or I can give it to you on a stick or DVD.) A few serious early problems with it have been solved now. If you do install it and then find you don't like it, you can easily click a few buttons and return to what you have now. I've done this a few times now and had no problems going back. *What advantages will you get?* * On ordinary computers it will start up and probably run faster than Windows 7. * Windows 8 "Apps" now have the usual cross and minimize buttons rather than forcing you into full screen. * You'll be 'up to date' so you don't have to worry about losing support in 4+ years for Windows 7 in 2020 * Some enhanced 'search' features * A nice new Start Menu which combines tiles and the usual Windows 7 style menu. * A "Recent Files" and "Recent Folders" view. * Integrates with Google Calendar as well as Microsoft's. *What disadvantages?* * Some think Microsoft will be able to spy on all your files and emails. o For more information click here . o For opposite opinion click here . * If not set up carefully, it might use your Internet to upgrade other people's computers. More info Here . * Your Antivirus might need to be uninstalled and reinstalled if the upgrade fails. * Small chance things might stop working after the upgrade. (Wireless, USB devices, etc.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *If you want to upgrade:* If you're on a slow, expensive connection like Satellite or 3G / 4G it might be better to take your computer to a friend's home who has ADSL or NBN and install the upgrade there. When done, check that it's not going to share your internet connection to upgrade the rest of the world. Alternatively, I can put it on a USB stick or DVD for you to install it. You can of course also ask me to install it for you, and it would cost between $35 and $70 depending on if there are complications. (It would be an overnight upgrade in most cases as I always do a system backup first and these take time.) /If you want to really get the best speed possible, consider asking me to install an SSD for you at the same time. A recent customer's seven year old Toshiba laptop, upgraded to Windows 10 and with an SSD added now starts up in under ten seconds!//They cost about $75 to $140 depending on size you need and are by far the single best upgrade you can do for your computer. (They're what make iPads and Smartphones so much faster than your laptop.)/ *If you don't want to upgrade? * You can keep ignoring the pesky icon, but Microsoft is determined to remind you every day. You can remove the icon by following these steps * Option 1 - Hide the icon, or remove the update that caused it. * Option 2 - Use "I don't Want Windows 10 " Side note: Some sites are reporting that Windows 7 and 8 are being updated to include the same spying features as Windows 10. I'm not convinced that it's as significant as it could just be their way of seeing if your computer is compatible with Windows 10 and allow developers to better see how you're using your computer. However if you are concerned about this you can research it yourself and remove those updates. For example, click here . If you're really paranoid, Linux Mint is another option. Cheers, Mike. PS - Some articles too small to justify a Newsletter are getting posted to the Cool Country Consulting Facebook page. I am considering setting up a new mailing list that receives a copy of those posts - they'd be shorter newsletters but would in some cases have pictures or other content which this newsletter doesn't. Your feedback is welcome. Message-ID: Hi all :) Just a quick note that if your computer unexpectedly pops up a message saying there are problems and to call a 1800 number, please don't. It's just a scam. Anyone can easily set up a 1800 number these days and redirect it to whatever country they like. I've had two such attacks reported in the last 24 hours. Cheers, Mike. -- ________________________________ Proprietor, Cool Country Consulting.
