We have used the paid version of PublicIP for 5 years. It has worked well for us but as many here have stated, the support seems to be dead. Luckily I have rarely needed it. Anyone know what is going on? I am due for a renewal on two hotspots and was thinking of adding a third but I don't want to pay for another year of service if they are going belly up.

I use the paid service. The auth servers are still working but no response from anyone (if there's more than just scott) at publicip. I have been trying to ask a question about billing for about a year now. All support tickets since then are still open. All of scotts numbers are disconnected. The registered whois address for anything connected to scott is a residence, not a business(thanks google) and the Domain name is due to expire within a month. This is a lame way to do business. On the plus side, one of my APs has been working unpaid for about a year now. I had thought that maybe he wound up deceased or something, but the response on publicip.net's shutdown shows he just stopped working on any of it. Personally I enjoyed using the system and would continue to pay to use it if I could. Oh well, time to find a new way to put up the walled garden for my customers.

I ended up getting one second hand off ebay. It works fine for me and im 85kg. But I couldn't help myself and had to pull it apart to see how they de-rated the motor. All that extra power if I can get it back to 300watts.
Anyway I pulled the motor out and all details on the motor plate have been removed. All that was still on the motor is the name DMEGC. So im guessing if they went to the trouble of removing the label off the motor then they must of replaced the motor with a 200 watt unit. Looking at the different sizes online the 300 watt motors are the same dimensions as the 200watt motors and cheap too. But I will take to motor over the our local motor rewind buisness here in newcastle and see what they think.

I have stopped using this and upgraded to an Electric Bike Conversion instead. It cost $400 with batteries. Both devices claim to be 200 watts, but it will do 29KPH and range up to 15km flat out whereas the scooter maxes out around 20KPH and tends to eat batteries since it works them very hard. (Currently running on 4 * 6V 10Ah batteries. Originals were 12V9Ah batteries. Bike kit has 12V 15Ah batts.

We have been using PublicIP service for over a year now with few issues - my only concern is if it dies then we are left scrambling for a costly replacement as what happened with a dlink hardware product that just up and quit - I agree with you on your comments about requests for help - it does not matter what level of status you put down - I have been trying to switch from monthly pay to annual pay and it will not let me change - keeps saying contact Support - I guess we will use the service while I look for a replacement. Good luck guys!

Not really - my idea was that it would just be 'out of the way' so she could play her podcasts from her Palm using the wired connection, and use the bluetooth hands free for the mobile while driving.

Connecting the wired device forces the transmitter to always on, reducing the battery time to probably around 10 hours, and preventing recharge.

Can't recharge in the vehicle unless the ignition is on.

When unplugged from charger it powers down

Power button is not instantaneous

It looks cute, and for it's basic intended purpose it's OK, but it is by no means a set and forget device; so it won't get used.

The only rebuild problem was that the join near the T piece was catching on the T Piece, so they had to put in a longer length of rod :)

It is probably easier to call someone to fix it, but at $2,700 to repair, it's quite tempting to do it yourself if you have the time and the tools.

The paid version is a very good solution for the price. We are a public library who has been using it for years. However, there is ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, except when it comes to billing matters. All tickets, no matter whether the status is "critical", go into a black hole and never return. So, it's great if you can get it to work, but you are SOL if you run into any problems you can't fix yourself!

Thanks for the good work. I'm in the process of repairing a mill. I've taken the pump out and replaced the buckets. I now need to rebuild the mill. I'm having trouble putting the pipe back down the bore. I'm hoping that it's just rubbish build up. Did you encounter any problems on your rebuild.

Paul,

Your testimonial to the paid service is good information. However, the grumbling is in reference to the free service and the expectation that these users would WANT to move to the paid service while receiving (or not receiving) terrible support. Or worse yet, discontinuation of the service with no explanation or encouragement to move to the paid service. Offering a free service to entice customers to the full-featured paid service is a valid and reasonable marketing tactic. However, one must provide services that will genuinely present a reason for a customer to upgrade. PublicIP has alienated their "free" customers thereby leaving no reason to trust the company or justify an upgrade.

I just purchased an AVG to TV adapter
(UM2000) from Meg at alwaysdirect.com.au (cost me A$40).
connects to your PC Monitor cable and outputs Composit PAL or S-Video, you only have to add a cable from this little box to your AV connectors on the TV or VHS etc and away you go....
Anything you can see on the PC monitor you can now see on the TV
or record on any TV recorder......
Just beware !!! the resolution
(clarity) of a tv set is much much
less than a PC Monitor.
